Is Mathematics Human

Worth Noting:

  • Albert Einstein wondered how is it possible that mathematics does so well in explaining the universe as we see it.
  • Is mathematics “Human” and is it key to the cosmos?. Our physical world doesn’t just have some mathematical properties but has and is made up of mathematical properties, mathematics indeed is a real great mystery.
  • We have always looked at nature in search of patterns, a few years ago, humans have gazed at the stars and discovered patterns we call constellations, even coming to believe they might control our destiny. We continue to watch days come to night and back to day and see seasons as they come and go and we call that pattern time.
NASA landing a Marz navigation rover

We live in an age of astonishing advances, engineers can land a car sized rover on Marz as we continue to study the essence of matter while we communicate wirelessly on a vast worldwide network. Underlying all these modern wonders is something deep and mysteriously powerful, it’s been called the language of the universe and perhaps it’s civilization’s greatest achievement, it’s name mathematics.

Spiral Shapes in nature and the universe

We’ve always had questions in our brains since childhood like “which came first, the egg or the hen” and today we’re asking our selves “where does math come from and why in science does it work so well”.

Albert Einstein wondered how is it possible that mathematics does so well in explaining the universe as we see it.

Is mathematics “Human” and is it key to the cosmos?. Our physical world doesn’t just have some mathematical properties but has and is made up of mathematical properties, mathematics indeed is a real great mystery.

We have always looked at nature in search of patterns, a few years ago, humans have gazed at the stars and discovered patterns we call constellations, even coming to believe they might control our destiny. We continue to watch days come to night and back to day and see seasons as they come and go and we call that pattern time.

Elliptical Math Equations

We see symmetrical patterns in the human body and in tiger strips and build those patterns into what we create from art to our cities.

Patterns are really astonishing, why should a spiral shape of a shell be similar to the spiral shape of a galaxy and that found in a cut slice of cabbage.

When we seek to understand the patterns of the world, we often turn to a powerful tool called mathematics, which helps us quantify our observations and use mathematical techniques to examine them hoping to discover the underlying causes of natural rhythm’s, irregularities, and secrets behind the elliptical orbits of the planets to the electromagnetic waves that connect our cell phones.

Math and Music

Mathematics is even the way leading right down to the sub-atomic building blocks of matter which rises the question, why does it work it up?. Is there and inherent mathematical nature to reality or is mathematics all in our brains?

Mathematics is evident in musical notes displayed by a guitar in action and this is surprisingly questionable as to why the musical notes displayed fulfill the Pythagoras theorem.

Mario Livio a mathematics specialist said “if you look at nature, there are numbers all around us, looking at flowers for example; and their differences in the number of petals, it’s amazing how these numbers they display occur in a mathematical sequence called the fibonacci sequence, and its interesting how nature favors these numbers.

Fibonacci Sequence in Nature (flowers).

Einstein remarked that “How can it be that mathematics being after all a product of human thought which is independent of experience, is so admirably appropriate to the objects of reality”.

One of the responses to Einsteins conundrum which fascinates me is that “math is innate”.

It’s reasoning being that mathematics as the natural language of science makes the universe underpinned by the same order, and hence the structures of mathematics are intrinsic to nature.

Moreover, if the universe disappeared tomorrow, our external mathematical truths would still exist. Our continuous discovery of mathematics and it’s working will help us in building models that will give us predictive power and understanding of the physical phenomena we seek to control.

This rater romantic position is humans call “mathematical platonism”.

One question that is still unbounded is whether “mathematics is invented by humans just like chisels, machines and pieces of music or it is discovered”. As we have seen that mathematics has a strong relationship with humans and nature, it implies that mathematics lives with us and thus it’s of great essence to ask our brains “is mathematics human?”.

In conclusion, i believe as always out there somewhere, like a mysterious island waiting to be found!!, a long as mathematics exist, reality will always be defined.
