Self esteem

Self-esteem refers to a person’s overall sense of his or her value or worth. It can be considered a sort of measure of how much a person “values, approves of, appreciates, prizes, or likes him or herself” (Adler & Stewart, 2004). It includes beliefs, emotional states like happiness, calmness, anger, despair, triumph, hostility and anxiety

Some factors that influence self-esteem are life experiences, genetics, age, health, personality, reactions of others, comparing the self to others and thoughts.

There are three types of self esteem

Inflated self-esteem where people think or feel themselves more important than others

High self-esteem where people accept who they are and get contented

Low self-esteem refers to a situation where one undermines him/herself, feels less useful compared to others

Indicators of strength in self esteem

Openness to receive feedback

Ability to set boundaries

Not scared by conflict

Confidence in own actions

Self-approval

Self-acceptance

Self-examines and are creative

Loving and respectful relationships

Does not fear failure

See world in realistic terms and appreciates other people

Feel sufficient about self i.e. not regard self as inferior

Able to set boundaries

Share their opinions with others

Appreciate themselves and other people

Find fulfillment and meaning in their lives.

Ways of boosting self esteem

Spend time on issues that you like or activities of interest / hobbies. Doing what brings joy to you

Associate yourself with friendly / supportive people

Direct your energies to what is within your control. This will help you avoid frustrations

Set realistic goals. Keep in mind that no one is perfect

Keep yourself busy, this will help you to avoid unnecessary thoughts

Celebrate every victory, this will assist to build confidence and bring appreciation of self

Be kind to others to create a positive mood which you will in turn enjoy

Build confidence through failure .Use past experience as learning experience.

Be willing to adjust your image

Stop comparing yourself with others

Do the right thing

Handle mistakes and failures in a positive way.

Be prepare for wide range of outcomes when faced with different situations

Practice positive affirmations
