Wamuchomba’s defection to UDA was inconsequential, won’t add any value to DP’s bid

Gathoni Wamuchomba with DP Ruto

Worth Noting:

  • This is our message to DP. She is a spoiler and if he opts to work closely with her, she would end up doing more harm than good to his presidential bid.
  • Having said this, I noted that the defection of Gathoni and three other Kikuyu MPs was a weighty matter with serious political implications.
  • As usual, the opinion of Kikuyus was divided but it was interesting to hear this. A good number of those supporting the DP, who used to castigate Gathoni because of defending President Kenyatta’s track record, would change the tune.

Hours after the news of defection of Kiambu woman representative Gathoni Wamuchomba to DP Ruto-linked United Democratic Party broke out, I listened to the reactions of a cross section of Thika residents aired by one of the Kikuyu vernacular radio stations [iNooro FM].

Majority of them reasoned that her move was inconsequential and will not add any value to DP’s presidential bid. Gathoni knows that Kiambu people lost faith and confidence in her long time. This is because she has not fulfilled a raft of promises she made during the electioneering period. We also recall her infamous statement when she demanded a salary increment soon after being elected.

She had not even received her first pay slip. This depicted her as a greedy woman, who was out to mint millions of shillings, rather than address our myriad of challenges. Joining UDA is like wearing a new cloth. She remains the same person and should forget our votes.

We have no problem with her. Reason? She has joined our camp. This would reinforce the point that Kenyans are pawns in political game. Like a sheep which would not know it was being taken to a slaughterhouse, they would ‘religiously’ follow the footsteps and dictates of their politicians.

In Githurai, I had candid talk with two men, a Kisii and a Luhya, who happened to share the same sentiments. These defections clearly show that Uhuru Kenyatta has lost the grip of his Mount Kenya stronghold. As such, he has no moral authority to direct us on whom to vote for. While confessing they were ardent supporters of DP Ruto, the two asked Uhuru to keep the succession politics.

The Luhya guy added: In 2022, it will be a two-horse race. Majority of youth like me will vote for DP and the elderly will vote for Raila. So, even if Ruto will not ascend to power, he will become a formidable opposition leader.

The Kisii man would almost blow up when I asked him. What if Uhuru and Raila would pick CS Fred Matiangi to be the presidential candidate to face it off with Ruto at the ballot? Forget Matiangi. He cannot make it. He would however present a strong and convincing argument to defend his point. Instead, he became emotional.

On the issue of corruption, the two and a woman, who had come buy some mandazis and opted to also chip in, stated that all the political leaders are corrupt. In Kenya, no one is clean. So, we cannot listen to those calling Ruto “the high priest of corruption”. With this, I realized that the propaganda and lies being peddled around were working. A good number of Kenyans had been blind-folded. They would not see Kenyatta’s track record and appreciate his work. God help Kenya.
