Worth Noting:

  • Following the above-mentioned commitments from the COP26 summit, I here by calling upon the government agencies like National Environmental Management Authority, National Forestry Authority, ministry of water and environment to enact environmental laws and policies to keep the environment decent and green to stop the destruction of forests especially the bugoma and zoka forests in Uganda.
  • There is also need to implement the Tree planting law so that more trees are planted to mitigate climate change impacts.

I wish to congratulate everyone upon finishing the last year and welcome you in this new year, where we did fail in last year, we are given a chance to try again this year as we promote a greener and decent environment for our students to report to school.

Editor, as we experienced the two year lockdown due to the covid19, our economy was at stake and millions of people died due to climate change impacts, environment was destroyed due to high deforestation, green house gas emissions increased to above 1.5oc , there was increased unemployment rates and high criminal rates.

However, amidst the above challenges during the course of the year, we managed to participate in COP26 with UK government which was the keynote and savior to increase on the climate adaptation and resilience. Its very clear to remind ourselves that  during the COP26 conference , ministry of water and environment dedicated to plant more trees to mitigate climate change,  during the   summit , all countries agreed to revisit and strengthen their current emissions targets to 2030 known as National  Determined Contributors  (NDC s)  in 2022,  they continued to commit increase financial support  through the adaptation fund as developed countries were urged to double  their support to developing countries by 2025. In addition, they were committed to protect natural forest and end deforestation by 2030. More so, the COP26 ended with a global agreement to accelerate action on climate change impacts.

Following the above-mentioned commitments from the COP26 summit, I here by calling upon the government agencies like National Environmental Management Authority, National Forestry Authority, ministry of water and environment to enact environmental laws and policies to keep the environment decent and green to stop the destruction of forests especially the bugoma and zoka forests in Uganda. There is also need to implement the Tree planting law so that more trees are planted to mitigate climate change impacts.

Henceforth, as students report back to school, they also need to participate in conserving the environment by planting trees in the school gardens to provide shade, and conducive atmosphere while taking on their classes. This can be done by the ministry of education and sports together with environmental Agencies to support schools in planting trees to mitigate climate change impacts and to reduce on the environmental destruction.

In my opinion,  we deserve a decent environment for students to concentrate in school, green gas emissions to be reduced to zero by 2050 , more trees to be planted to reduce on deforestation , and the ecosystem to be protected from oil activities to keep the wild animals habitants safe  and protect the human rights especially the vulnerable.

I wish you a prosperous new year 2022.

For God and my country
